Advocacy in Action, 2019 Legislative Summit Recap

TFFA members from across the state gathered in Austin this week to flex their political muscle.  75 members met with 55 legislative offices, as well as the Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives Dennis Bonnen, and representatives of Governor Greg Abbott and Lt. Governor Dan Patrick’s offices.

The purpose?  To champion legislative initiatives that have a direct impact on the economic growth and mobility of convenience retailers and fuel marketers, including the customers they serve.

Participants experienced what it is like to be a lobbyist for a day by offering members the opportunity to visit with lawmakers who rely on their constituencies to support their political agendas.  Participants shared information about their business operations, their customers, the communities they serve, and the legislative issues that impact their livelihood.

During visits, participants presented legislative and regulatory priorities, including: credit card skimming, TDA over-regulation, tobacco 21, and statewide employment standards.

Following the round of morning meetings, the group was recognized with resolutions by both the Texas House of Representatives and the Texas Senate.  Special thanks to Representative Trent Ashby and Senator Lois Kolkhorst for authoring these resolutions.

The day ended with a memorable ping pong tournament at SPIN.  Congratulations to Clay Johnson, President of Tex-Con Oil, who proved victorious and took home the grand prize!

Following the Legislative Summit was a Wranglers Scholarship Foundation Golf Tournament which raised over $2,500.  First place team included Sean Smith (Quality DEF Solutions), Kurt Whitley (OPIA), Tom Hauser (OPIA), and Steve Stroll (OPIA).  Jim Dukes (Altria) had the longest putt of the day and Ryan Hillstead (Tex-Con Oil) crushed the competition winning longest drive.  Congratulations to all the golfers who played for a great cause.

Big thanks to all who participated and rallied together at the 2019 Legislative Summit.  The event was hugely successful in furthering TFFA’s mission and unifying industry professionals.

Lastly, this event would not have been possible without the support of our event sponsors: Altria and Federated Insurance.  Thank you for your financial commitment and presence this week.
