ExxonMobil Launches Voice-Activated Payment at the Pump

ExxonMobil Launches Voice-Activated Payment at the Pump

Later this year, Exxon or Mobil gasoline customers with an enabled mobility
device will be able to pay for fuel at the pump using just their voices, the
oil major said Monday along with payments technology company Fiserv.

The new payment service will be possible using Alexa-enabled vehicles, Echo
Auto and other Alexa-enabled mobility devices, according to the companies'
statement. The payment method will be demonstrated this week at the Consumer
Electronics Show in Las Vegas in the Amazon Automotive booth, and be made
available at more than 11,500 Exxon and Mobil stations later in 2020.

It will take just four words spoken aloud for Amazon's virtual assistant -
"Alexa, pay for gas" -- for customers to fill up. After Alexa confirms the
station location and the pump number, Fiserv digital commerce technology will
activate the pump and facilitate token generation to help ensure a secure
payment. Payments are then processed through Amazon Pay, with no additional
sign-up or separate account required.

"We're excited to bring new technology and better experiences to the gas
station," said Eric Carmichael, Americas fuels marketing manager at ExxonMobil.
"We build and seek out technology that will wow our consumers, providing both
ease of use and security."

ExxonMobil is the first fuel provider to offer a voice-activated purchase
option through Alexa artificial intelligence technology, the statement said, in
an expansion of its payment solutions beyond the current Exxon Mobil Rewards+
app.

As reported by OPIS in November, the Rewards+ app has replaced the Exxon Mobil
Speedpass+ app, integrating its rewards program with mobile payment and
stepping up the rewards program by personalizing offers based on purchase
history and geo-location.
