NFPA Council Rejects Proposed Fire Safety Rules for EVs at Gas Stations
The Standards Council for the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)
rejected proposed standards for electric vehicle chargers at gas stations and
auto repair garages at its April 11-13 meeting, according to meeting minutes
posted on Wednesday.
Several industry trade associations opposed the proposal, saying it could
prevent existing gas stations from diversifying into EV charging stations.
Though NFPA standards are voluntary, federal, state and local jurisdictions
often adopt them directly or by reference through other fire codes.
Tentative Interim Amendment No. 1621 would have revised and added new sections
to the NFPA "Code for Motor Fuel Dispensing Facilities and Repair Garages."
"The TIA failed to achieve the necessary support of the Technical Committee on
both technical merit and emergency nature when balloted prior to submission to
the Standards Council," the minutes said.
