Texas Comptroller Tax Filing Extension for Motor Fuels Sales Tax Due to Hurricane Harvey
In response to disruptions and complications caused by the destruction of Hurricane Harvey, the Texas Comptroller is allowing businesses to apply for 90 day tax filing extensions for motor fuels sales taxes.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the people who are dealing with this catastrophic weather event… taxpayers will need to focus on cleanup and recovery in the weeks and months to come. Giving folks in these disaster zones the opportunity to request a filing and payment extension should allow them to focus on those recovery efforts without the worry of a looming tax deadline.”- Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar
As posted on the Comptroller’s website: Some taxpayers may be unable to file taxes timely due to damage caused by a declared natural disaster. The Comptroller can grant an extension of up to 90 days to file tax returns to a business affected by a declared disaster. An affected business must request the extension. These types of extension requests are handled on a case-by-case basis. For more information or to request a tax filing extension, call the Comptroller's tax assistance line at 1-800-252-5555.
The previous sales tax reports were due on August 20th so the next round of reports will be due on September 20th. Please note that this gives TFFA members roughly 20 days to request an extension from the Comptroller’s office.
