We Need Your Help Developing a National Emergency Readiness Plan!

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is supporting a project by the National Association of Convenience Stores (NACS) to develop an emergency preparedness program for convenience stores.

Convenience stores are the delivery point of the supply chain for fuel, food, water, and financial services — all of which are vital resources during natural disasters.

Disasters threaten the livelihood of convenience stores, especially those in hazard zones. While disasters can happen anywhere, hurricane-prone Texas leads in store count at 15,813, leaving 10% of the nations convenience stores and millions of end users in jeopardy.

When a convenience store does not open, the business is at risk. And the longer it stays closed, the greater the chance that the store will never reopen.  Did you know that according to FEMA, following a disaster, 90% of smaller companies fail within a year unless they can resume operations within 5 days?

The goal for this project is to (a) improve convenience stores’ ability to help the community by protecting employees and facilities and (b) get stores back in business faster.

The Ask to Retailers:
We need your help in understanding how you currently plan and train for emergencies. Specifically, would you share:
  • Your corporate emergency or business continuity plan
  • An individual store emergency plan
  • Training materials used by store managers and employees to prepare and respond to emergencies
Your plans and training will be held in complete confidence — from the materials you send to the discussions you have with NACS.   DHS will not have any access to your materials or answers.

THE DEADLINE TO SUBMIT YOUR MATERIALS IS JANUARY 25, 2019.

Please email your materials to Carolyn Schnare, Director of Strategic Initiatives, cschnare@convenience.org.  For additional questions please contact Jesus Azanza, Director of Marketing & Business Development, at 512.617.4309 or jazanza@tffa.com.
